Smartphones have made recording, sharing, and reliving recent family memories easier and more popular than ever before, however, everything is relative. During the Great Depression when Kodak introduced 8mm film, this cost-effective, easier to use alternative to 16mm film sparked a home moviemaking craze. Likewise, this happened again when Super 8mm film was introduced in 1965, although on a much grander scale. Regardless of the format, old movies depict fascinating images of rural, suburban, and big city life in America, thereby providing visually-rich insights into life in the 20th century. This is true even if they were taken by amateur filmmaking enthusiasts.

Vintage home movies provide a window into cultural and family history, but they can deteriorate and don’t serve any purpose if you can’t watch them. Under typical conditions, instability and general chemical breakdown are inevitable within 20 years or less. Too often, improper storage causes serious damage that may be fixable, but at an additional cost if full restoration is required. That’s the main reason why it’s important to convert old film reels to digital sooner rather than later.

If you discovered a stack of old movies but don’t own a working projector, it’s still possible to enjoy them with family and friends. At ScanDigital, we have an impressive variety of projectors needed to capture and convert film reels to digital, as long as the reels measure between 3” and 14” in diameter. While we can digitize any silent movie reel and Super 8 format with sound, we aren’t able to add or edit sound when we convert them. Just tell us how many of each size reel you wish to transfer, start packing, send them, and we’ll take care of the rest. Our expert technicians can transfer film reels to digital files in any of the following film formats:

  • 8mm, Super 8, Super 8mm with sound, 16mm, and 35mm
